During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A Chandra image release was issued on Dec 22 with four new winter-themed images that contain X-rays from Chandra and data from other telescopes. These include NGC 4782 and NGC 4783, a pair of interacting galaxies that when oriented in a certain way resembles a snowman (data from Chandra and HST); NGC 2264, a relatively young nebula with ongoing star formation that resembles a Christmas tree (data from Chandra, XMM, and a ground-based optical telescope); NGC 6357, containing Pismis 24, a young cluster of stars about 5,500 light-years from Earth, showing a stellar landscape reminiscent of a winter vista (data from Chandra and JWST); and M78, a striking reflection nebula that may also bring a partridge in the proverbial pear tree to mind (data from Chandra and Euclid). For details, see https://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2025/holidays/ The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below. |
