Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 11 November 2016 9.00am EST

During the last week observing schedule was replanned to incorporate an observation of GRB161104A, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Nov 5. Time from a scheduled observation of Abell 1795 outskirts was impacted by the replan and will be rescheduled in a future week.

A Chandra image release was issued on Nov 9 describing observations of the active galaxy Markarian 1018. Markarian 1018 has brightened and dimmed over about 30 years. Such shifting between bright and dim phases has never been studied before in such detail. By combining data from Chandra, VLT and several other telescopes, scientists have narrowed in on the explanation. It appears the dimming arises from the black hole at the center being deprived of enough fuel to illuminate its surroundings. For details see:

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of a new nova, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Nov 8.
